Are you better off today?

Thanksgiving Day is a perfect day to ponder where we are...

So here goes.

In 1980 on the presidential campaign trail,
Ronald Reagan asked Americans,

"Are you better off today than you were four years ago?"

The answer that most people silently gave themselves is a

very big reason Mr. Reagan won the American Presidency
twice - and big.

This is a consequential question for us as network marketers also.

Starting a little business of one's own is no trivial thing.

So think back a moment...

To six months ago.

Assuming you intended that the business would make

you better off in say six months (at least)...

Did that happen?

If not, how can you change that?

The Box, or "Why You're Not Wealthy"

Everyone lives in a box.

Your perception of "how things are" is your box.

Own a house?


It's in your box.

Got kids?


They're in your box.

Earning $43,565 at a job you don't like?

That job is in the box.

So is the $43,565.

Here's what else:

If you believe you have to work hard to be successful...

...that hard work is in your box, too.

If you think that you're not wealthy because of your lack of education...

...that lack of wealth is in the box.

Along with your lack of a college degree.

It's all in there.

Everything you have and accept as "how things are" is in the box.

Now, here's what's also true...

Everything you want from life that you don't already have...

...is outside your box.

And the "odds" --

in terms of the percentage of people who make the choice --

the "odds" are that you will never get to have what you want
simply because your wants aren't powerful enough to overcome
your insecurity of being outside the box.

Get that.

Because that's the only thing keeping you from getting
what you want: the insecurity, the fear or the anxiety
of doing the things that will bring those goals
INTO your box.

Thus, success is simply a choice.

So, why aren't you wealthy already?

Simple:

Because you haven't chosen to BE that person.

You're busy staying in your box.

In fact, maybe you've decided not to be wealthy.

You might think, "Tony who would decide not to be wealthy?"

Well, you probably didn't say "I've decided not to be wealthy"....

But if you're not wealthy it's because you have
made the choices that do NOT lead to wealth.

And it's really the same thing.

You are where you are because --
either through action or inaction --
this is really where you wanted to be.

In fact, some of you are reading this right now and
you're appalled that someone should say such a thing.

That someone would suggest that your "not being wealthy"
has been a choice on your part.

You might even have a lot of "monkey chatter" going
in your head right now listing all the perfectly
good reasons why not being wealthy is not your choosing.

And here's the catch:

The reasons you give yourself for why you're not rich is
the stand that you've taken against becoming wealthy.

If you are not wealthy, you will be defending your decision
to remain in your current state EVEN AS YOU READ THIS.

If you don't believe it...

Stop right now and listen to your mind chatter.

Fortunately, the solution is quite simple.

Understand that you cannot get to where you want
to go with the same quality of thinking that
created your present situation.

Change your thinking and decisions and you change your life.

Get out of the box. Wonderful things are waiting.

Get Rid of the Frogs

"When shall I entreat for thee, and for thy servants,
and for thy people, to destroy the frogs from thee
and thy houses?" (Exodus 8:9)

Have you ever wrestled with one of those problems
that stubbornly refuses to go away?

It seems to be immune to all solutions.

You swat at the thing in every conceivable way,
but instead of being eliminated, it expands and
multiplies until it's wildly out of control.

An Egyptian pharaoh faced just that kind of problem,
the Bible tells us, thousands of years ago.

He was in a hot dispute with God over the future
of the Israelites, and as a result of that dispute,
he woke up one morning to find his country

swarming with frogs.

Slimy, smelly, hopping-all-over-the-place frogs.

It was a serious problem.

I'm not talking about a frog or two in the front yard.

I mean frogs were everywhere --
in their beds, on their tables.

Big old frogs in the ovens.

Little bitty frogs in the bread dough
and the drinking water.

Frogs.

Frogs in your hair.

Frogs in places you wouldn't even want to think about!

Then God made a move.

He sent His man Moses in to Pharaoh to ask,
"When shall I entreat the Lord to get these
frogs out of here?"

Do you know what Pharaoh said?

"Tomorrow."

Can you imagine that?

He could have said, "Right now! Today!"

But instead he decided he'd spend
one more night among the frogs.

You say, "That's the stupidest thing I ever heard."

Why in the world would he do it tomorrow?

I don't know.

Probably for the same reason you want
to wait until tomorrow to get saved
or healed or prosperous.

Here's what I want you to notice.

When Moses asked Pharaoh that question and he answered,
"Tomorrow," Moses said, "All right."

"So that you know there's a God in heaven,
BE IT DONE UNTO YOU ACCORDING

TO YOUR WORDS."

Let me ask you this:

How long are you willing to let that
persisting problem harass you?

When are you going to get rid
of the frogs in your life?

Do you realize they'll stay around
as long as you'll let them?

They'll be there until you finally make
a quality decision to go with the

Word of God and get them out.

Why don't you do it today?

It Doesn't Matter!

Know what doesn't matter (in network marketing)?

It.

Know what "it" is?

Take your pick of the following "its":

Having the (really, no kidding, you can prove it) best product.

Having the (really, no kidding, you can prove it) best comp plan.

Having the (really, no kidding, you can prove it) best people
who ever ran a network marketing company in the history
of the world.

None of that or those matter.

None.

One thing and one thing only matters.

You SELLING your product successfully and enrolling
business-builders in/on your team who do the same
or better.

That's it.

That's all.

"Well... you've got to have the best product,
and plan, and people to do that."

NO you don't.

Look around—in and out of network marketing.

The MOST successful business enterprises you can name
DO NOT have the "best" anything... except sales.

Yes, I know... I know...

But tell me please...


What are you "after" in your business?

Sales (which is what you are paid for)
is where the rubber meets the road.

Without that, you're driving a parked car
(even if it is a $1.2 million, 248 mph
Bugatti Veyron 16.4).

BTW, the best selling car in the world is
the Toyota Corolla with 35 million sold.

Hardly "the best" automobile in the world.

"I Can't Afford It"

"I can't afford it"

That's not true.

At least it's not true almost all the time.

Very few of your prospects
literally can't afford it.

What they are really trying to say is,
"it's not worth it."

As in -

it's not worth re-prioritizing my life...

not worth the risk...

not worth what I'll have to
give up to get this...

not worth being in debt for.

One response to repeated
cries of "I can't afford it"
is to lower your prices.

A better response is to tell a better,
more accurate story, and to tell it
to the right people.

The best response is to make something worth paying for.

Three Warning Signs of Poverty Mentality

Three Warning Signs of Poverty Mentality

When was the last time you gave any serious thought
to your priorities, and where you expend your energy?

Can you say with certainty that you are completely
focused on ‘abundance’ and not on ‘lack’?

I don’t think people are born with an
abundance mentality or a lack mentality.

I think for many of us our priorities are the
result of subtle, subconscious ‘programming’
that determines our approach to just about
everything in life.

Instead of being programmed for success,
most people are programmed to avoid
failure.

This programming controls how you react to hundreds
of situations, each and every day. And the way you
react reveals what your programming really is.

There are many different warning signs all around
us that we are suffering from lack programming or
a poverty mentality, but none of these red flags
will be of any use until we open our eyes and
start looking for them.

Like posted traffic signs and speed limits,
these warning signs are there for our benefit,
helping us raise awareness of our programming.

Three of the most common warning signs
I see are the following:

Warning sign #1: Constant Money Fixation

What do you think about money?

When you do think about it, are you concerned
about how much of it you lack,
or how much you can manifest?

Have you ever thought about why you want
to manifest money in the first place?

Most poor people spend all their time thinking about
money (or more specifically, their lack of it).

When I was younger and broke, that’s what I did.

I was fixated on money.

I thought about all the things I didn’t have and couldn’t get.

And I was very jealous of the people who had them.

Warning sign #2: "I Hate Rich People!"

Being jealous of all the things other people
had that I didn’t have, didn't help matters.

Know where it led?

Jealousy soon turned to hate.

Soon I hated all rich people because they had what I wanted
-- nice homes, exotic cars, expensive clothes.

That’s when the real problems started,
because as much as I hated rich people,
I was working hard every day trying to
become one!

That set the stage for a whole bunch of internal conflict
that I had no idea was going on.

I ended up surging forward to success,
only to sabotage myself every time I
got close.

I snatched defeat from the jaws of
victory more times than I can count.

I thought I was programmed for success,
but was actually programmed for poverty.

Warning sign #3:
Fear-Based Decision-Making Making

Decisions based on fear of loss or failure
never leads toward prosperity.


In fact, fear-based decision-making can rob you
of any sense of happiness or joy of success,
and distort your behavior.

Have you ever seen someone experience more anguish
at losing $10 than earning $100?

Ever seen someone drive around a parking lot
for 10 minutes to avoid a one-minute walk to
the store?

These scenarios are fear-based, not prosperity driven.

The decisions are not made on what the possible benefits are,
but made in order to avoid a possible negative outcome.

How do you know what kind of programming you have?

If you really want to know if you have prosperity
programming or a poverty mentality,
look for your answer in the previous scenarios.

Do they sound familiar?

If you make decisions--particularly money and career ones--
based on the "moving away from fear" model,
you’ve got poverty programming.

If your decisions are made based on a
positive "move toward prosperity" model,
then you have success programming.

What do you do if you test poverty programming?

You’re already doing it.

Raise your awareness of your programming
and recognize it for what it is.

Of particular importance is regulating the influences
you’re getting from the TV shows and movies you watch,
the books you read, etc.

I applied the principles of a prosperity mentality,
and you’d be hard pressed to find anyone who has
had a greater degree of turnaround.

This only happened because I was willing to confront
my weaknesses, discover and eliminate the insidious
poverty mentality I had, and replace it with positive
programming.

To this day, I am ever vigilant, mindful of
what I allow myself to watch and listen to,
and the people I associate with.

The more you experience success and prosperity,
the more you’ll start to realize how little
they have to do with opportunity, chance, luck -
or even training, education, or skill.

It has everything to do with consciousness,
beliefs, and even subconscious programming
that you aren’t aware of.

You see, poverty is not an absence of money and things
-- it is a mindset.

Prosperity is not an abundance of money and things
--it’s also a mindset.

When I began studying the laws that govern prosperity,
I had to get out of my comfort zone, face fears,
and really examine my belief system.

It was hard work, and sometimes still is,
but the results are well worth the
temporary discomfort.

I share all of this with you in the hope you
too will benefit from its truth.

I want you to be healthy, happy, and rich!

You Don’t Have To Be a Genius to Make Money

You Don’t Have To Be a Genius to Make Money,
But It Sure Helps to Know One!

or

Maybe I Was “Lucky”

Almost every day someone will tell me that
they want to make $10,000.00 a month,
and even more for goodness sakes...

But they won’t do what it takes
to make $100.00 a month.

They won’t take the action required to cover
their product costs, let alone do what it
takes to cover some marketing expenses.

They want to be a “heavy hitter” marketing guru,
and make the big bucks, yet they don’t want to
INVEST in the education – books, tapes, seminars,
etc – to learn how to do what they want to do...

...to have SUCCESS.

They'd rather watch American Idol on the TV
and learn how to make money by osmosis.

Yet these same people don’t bat an eye at
spending $100,000.00 and 4 years of their
lives to go to college to learn how to be
a $30,000 a year bookkeeper.

They want to quit their jobs and “go full time”,
yet they won’t INVEST one measly hour a day
in their business.

What in the world do they plan to do with
the extra 40 – 50 hours they have on their
hands if they quit their jobs?

They want to be in the marketing business,
but don’t want anyone to know about it.

Some even hide their business
from their spouses.

Good Lord.

If people in the “real” world thought the
way many people in direct sales think,
they’d certainly lose their jobs and
businesses, and maybe even be put in
a mental institution.

Maybe I thought like that before I got
into the direct sales business, because
I certainly lost my home, my business
and everything I owned once.

Maybe I was “lucky”, because I went down
the “stupid” highway before I was exposed
to direct sales.

And maybe I was “lucky”, because it wasn’t
“just a couple of hundred bucks” that I
INVESTED to start my direct sales business,
it was every cent I had and could put my
hands on in the world.

In fact, it was our grocery money.

No kidding.

You ever make spaghetti sauce with
the ketchup packs you saved up from
fast food joints?

We did, more than once too.

Maybe I was “lucky” because I had
to take my new business seriously,
or my family wouldn’t eat.

Maybe you could relate this to putting up
your home, all your savings, all of your
retirement benefits, all of your possessions,
and quitting your job to start a business
of some sort.

Do you think you would take that serious?

As serious as a heart attack, I’d think.

I talk with people every day that
don’t want to sell any products.

I’m not sure that they understand the English language.

What could they possibly think that
“marketing” and “direct sales” involves?

I tell these folks to toss their products
out the back door if they don’t want to
sell anything.

That’ll work.

Sort of like opening a convenience store,
and not wanting to sell the cigarettes and
beer, yet expecting money to materialize
in the cash register.

Seems foolish to me, but whatever rings
their bell, so what the heck.

I don’t understand where they’re coming from.

Maybe they know something I don’t.

But then, I’m the one getting
checks in the mail every day.

Maybe I was “lucky” that I had to sell
my initial order of products, in order
to pay for my next order.

You see, I “stole” $57.00 out of our
so-called budget to start my new
direct sales and marketing business.

Fifty-seven dollars.

On September 2, 1998.

But, the difference is, I didn’t INVEST
“just $57.00” in my new business,
I invested it ALL.

I had just “moved up” from homeless to
a tiny apartment in what can only be
described as a ghetto neighborhood.

Drunks and bums for neighbors…

The occasional shooting.

Anyway, fast-forward…

Less than 9 months later, on May 31, 1999,
I bought my wife the first new car she
had ever owned in her life.

A brand new, never been driven,
shiny black Toyota Camry.

She was so proud of it.

I was too.

Then, 23 months after opening my $57.00
direct sales and marketing business,
I bought my wife a real home,
in a nice neighborhood.

Still selling the products that I couldn’t
afford to keep 23 months earlier.

I guess I was “lucky.”

Maybe I got all the “breaks.”

Didn’t seem like it at the time.

But, looking back, I think I did get all the “breaks.”

My first “break” came just moments after
I bought in to my marketing business.

My sponsor vanished.

To this day, I have never heard another
word from him, or even about him.

He simply vanished.

Maybe he was abducted, I don’t know.

Maybe I’m a “genius.”

I didn’t even know the phone number
to the company I had just joined.

I had to wait until my first $57.00 order
arrived to find out how to contact the company.

Well, at least I was smart enough to know
that I needed to hook up with someone that
knew what they were doing...

Because I was “blessed” to not know a
thing about this marketing business.

Well, I have to admit that I was
“lucky” about one thing at least.

In the company newsletter that came with
my initial $57.00 order, they listed all
of the big money earners in the company.

They don’t list the people that don’t make any money.

Imagine that...

(I have since come to learn that most companies are like that.)

My “luck” is kicking in now, because if I’m
gonna call anyone for advice, it has to be
one of those big money earners on that list.

I just plain didn’t know how to contact anyone
as dumb and broke as myself, which is who I
certainly would have contacted given the chance.

Well, I’m about to learn my first lesson
in prosperity consciousness.

That lesson is this:

When you need business advice and counseling,
get it from someone who is already where
you want to be.

Not at the barroom or from your
dumb, broke brother-in-law.

Write this down:

If you want to make money,
you’ve got to get close to the money.

If you want to catch the flu,
hang around with people that have the flu.

If you want to make money,
hang around with people
that are making money.

It’s not much more complicated than that.

Oh, and you do need to heed their advice.

And, take action.

So, what’s the “secret” of success?

1. ASSOCIATE with successful people.
2. INVEST in your success education.
3. DO what successful people do.
4. Take ACTION. In other words, do it.

You can’t PLAY business,.

You’re either IN business, or you’re wasting
people’s time and your family’s money.

Specialized Knowledge

I believe in buying secrets.

and "know-how".

What you DO is as important

Doing requires confronting what
is NOT comfortable to you.

to seminars is comfortable.

DOING is not.

It's a learning curve.

Things don't work.

Things aren't as simple
as you wish.

That's part of life.

But if you really wanna make it happen,
you gotta focus on DOING.

And the main reason I bring up this
uncomfortable and unpopular truth
is because I want YOU to succeed.

My products for the most part
are NOT about secrets.

They're about DOING.

Yeah, that isn't as sexy and interesting and fun.

But do you wanna be entertained?

Or do you wanna make money?

If you wanna make money, then buy
your "know-how" carefully and
focus on DOING.

You don't HAVE unless you DO.

You gotta confront ACTION.

You gotta do things you are
NOT comfortable with.

You gotta pick up the phone and
call people or do interviews.

You gotta write things like sales letters
that are new learning curves.

And yes, you can outsource some
or all of the above --

IF you have the money to do it.

And can confront SPENDING the money
to hire people to do things.

And confront the idea you probably will
end up spending money on some things
that are junk or done wrong.

The basic questions are:

Who are you selling to?

What you selling them?

And how are you finding them?

But I'll spell them out:

Do you have your target market
or target audience yet?

That for a lot of people is the point
at which they stop or get stuck.

All things being equal, you're best off
selling something you can at least get
passionate about.

eBay Classifieds Exposed

You've seen those "Classified Ads" on eBay...

You ever try to set on up?

Ha!

There is a lot confusion about
HOW to put up a classified ad
on eBay.

Even eBay has little or no
user info on this topic.

Here's WHAT you need to do:

Two steps are required here...

First, you need to find the categories
that allow
classified ads.

Second, you need to find the hidden tab that turns them on.

For whatever reason, eBay seems to hide these things.

To see what eBay categories
accept classified ads:

STEP 1:

From the eBay.com homepage:

1- Click on "advanced search" (top of screen)
leaving all fields blank

2- Click on "search" leaving all fields blank

3- Under the "format" drop down box,
select "classified ads" and click
the "show" button out to the far
right hand side of the drop down boxes

You'll see a bunch of eBay categories
with zero listings, but scroll way down...

You'll see some categories
with hundreds of listings.

The listings with zeros aren't
eligible for classified ads.

The rest ARE eligible.

This will also get you an idea
of how few people are using
the classified ads!

Take note of the "eligible" category
you'll be using to list your item
before moving to STEP 2.

STEP 2:

Set up an ad in one of the approved categories:

1- From the eBay.com home page click
on "sell" and insert your item title
description

2- Proceed to the page where
you select your category

3- Select a category that allows classified ads
(from STEP 1)

4- Once you proceed to the page
titled "Sell: Create Your Listing"
scroll down to the section titled
"How you're selling".

At the top of that section
you should see FOUR tabs.

One of them is "classified ad"
ASSUMING that you've chosen a
category that ALLOWS classified
ads (from STEP 1 above)

5 Steps to Getting Started:

1. Go to CraigsList.org and select the city where
you’ll be conducting your buying/selling/hiring/etc.

2. Choose an appropriate category.

For example, if you wanted to sell a computer,
you’d go to the For Sale section of the site.

Then, within that section, you’d click on the Computers category.

3. Write a catchy headline and copy for your advertisement.

(You can choose to let people see your e-mail address or
have CraigsList forward all the responses to you…

4. Post your ad by clicking on the button in your

What Is Success?

Is success about money?

Lifestyle?

Working environment?

Peace of mind?

Self respect?

I think it's about all those things and more.

The definition of success varies.

Let me give you my basic definition of success:

A successful person has these six things:

PEACE OF MIND -

This means freedom from want, fear, and worry.

HEALTH -

This covers both physical and mental health.

Doesn't mean being in the shape of an
Olympic athlete, but rather that you
take care of yourself.

PART OF A COMMUNITY -

This is really important, and mostly
ignored by many people.

We are social animals, and we need
to have people around us who share
our interests.

FINANCIAL FREEDOM -

This doesn't necessarily mean
millions of dollars.

It means having enough money to handle
your needs, and/or being able to raise
money to cover any expenses.

John Lennon once said if he wanted a pool,
he'd write a song.

That's financial freedom in action.

WORTHY GOALS AND IDEAS -

This is about having a vision
of your future.


What's your future look like?

Is it making enough money working part time
to allow you a good lifestyle and more
time with your kids?

Is to retire early so you can travel?

Is it to be your own boss?

A worth goal is never expressed
in just dollar terms.

It's expressed as a lifestyle.

FEELING OF PERSONAL FULFILMENT -

This one is listed last because
it is the result of the first
five ingredients of success.

When we have or are making good
progress towards the first five

Making a Business of Your Passion

One of the most common recommendations that
you will hear from business-opportunity
"experts" is to "find something you love"
and make a business out of it.

In fact, I used to make that recommendation
myself, arguing that turning your passion
into a career is a good way to make
a good living.

This is the kind of advice that
feels right and inspires loyalty.

But when I thought about the successes
in my own business career, I didn't
see that pattern.

When I decided to get rich back in the early 1980s,
I didn't stop to ask myself "What do I love?"

I set to work the very next day transforming
myself from a sometimes-good, sometimes-disgruntled
editorial director into a 24/7 marketing maven,
and I boosted a marginally profitable,
million-dollar business to a $135 million cash machine.

I didn't love the products we produced,
but I loved the process.

I retired from that business -
but didn't stay retired for long.

With my second career, I was determined to
stay a little closer to my childhood dreams
by selling publications instead of products,
ideas instead of things.

Because I partnered with someone who shared
that mindset, I have been lucky.

I've made as much money this time around,
and without the emotional conflicts over
selling products I was less than
enthusiastic about.

But even as a publisher, I haven't
really "followed my dreams."

My true passion - in terms of publishing -
would be fiction and poetry.

I can say without any doubt that had I followed
that road, I would be running a much smaller,
much less profitable business.

And it might not have given me any
more pleasure than I get now.

As a recommendation, "turn your passion
into a career" no longer rings true to me.

As I said earlier, it's the kind
of advice you want to believe...

But it doesn't take reality into consideration.

Proceeding with a pragmatic purposefulness,
it seems to me, is the best course of action.

By "pragmatic purposefulness," I mean an
ounce of passion and a pound of practicality.

I mean facing the facts and making a realistic
assessment of the business idea you love so much.


Will it really work in the marketplace?

Will it really live up to your dreams?

The usefulness of this approach was made clear
to both me and the businesspeople who attended
my Business-Building Retreat last month.

Of the 30 people in attendance whose business plans
were scrutinized, at least six realized that the
financial expectations they had attached to their
dream projects were totally unrealistic.

"You have to adjust your wealth expectations
or change your business," they were advised.

It would be silly for them to push ahead,
following their passion, when it was easy
to see, by putting pen to paper, that the
businesses they had imagined could not work.

That's basically the same advice I have for LG,
an ETR reader who recently wrote to me.

LG has been advised by a well-known guru
(who shall remain nameless) to "find something
I love and make a business out of it."

He says he has found a business for sale that
matches one of his favorite hobbies: golf.

"It is a patent for a machine that
uses sonar to clean golf clubs.

Attached to the machine is an
LCD screen that displays ads.

The money to be made is not in
the actual cleaning of the clubs
but the selling of the ad space.

It is an absolute novel idea,
and the owner claims that he
has patented it all over the world.

My only problem is the cost
for the patent in my country.

He is selling it for what would be
about five million in U.S. dollars.

I've done a couple of sums, and I can see this
business paying off itself after 3-4 yrs.

My only problem is finding an investor
that would possibly want to fund this.

I know that the investor would make a very good ROI,
but I somehow need to find that person."

LG "really wants" to get this patent, and is hoping
I can tell him how to go about looking for the
five million bucks in start-up capital that he needs.

This is precisely the danger you face when
you follow your passions into business.

You make these kinds of mind-bogglingly foolish mistakes.

Invest your time and someone else's money into a machine
that spits out advertising as it cleans golf clubs?

Are you nuts?

If I had to list the top 10 stupid business ideas
I've ever heard, his would make it onto that list.

It is stupid not just because the idea itself is so idiotic,
but because the person behind the idea - the person supposedly
holding the patents - thinks he will find investors to buy into it.

Maybe that guy isn't so dumb.

He has found, in LG, somebody who
is seriously considering it.

[LG sounds like most MLMers I talk with.]

I don't have space here to list all the reasons
why this is a completely crazy business idea.

But let me use LG as an example for any other
ETR reader who may have bought into the
"follow-your-passion" fancy.

Listen, I know that it IS possible to turn your passion
(a hobby or lifelong dream) into a way to earn a good living -
but ONLY if there's a good business idea to support it.

How do you find out if your passion makes business sense?

Start by asking friends and colleagues what they think of it.

Tell them to be brutally frank.

Then look around and see if there's anything
like your idea out there in the marketplace.

If there isn't, chances are it's not going to work.

Unfortunately, because there are so many stories about
entrepreneurs who succeeded against all odds, the idea
of pursuing a screwball idea is often lauded.

But following your passion when it makes no sense...

Makes no sense.

And if you have a family to support, it's irresponsible.

The first and most important rule of entrepreneurship is this:

Never invest in anything unless you understand it extremely well -
unless you have the kind of knowledge about the business
and the industry that you can only get by working in it,
on the inside, for several years.

Staples founder Thomas Stemberg said it this way:

"I think following your passion is a really dumb idea.
I follow a great market that provides an opportunity
to satisfy customers and to make money."


LG has a passion for golf, but what does
he know about selling advertising?

Does he have any idea of the kind of advertisers
that might be interested in this kind of program?

Does he have any idea what kind of numbers
such advertisers would need before investing
their money?

Does he know anything about the size
and volatility of his target market?

I don't need to ask him to know that
he doesn't know these things.

The way he talks about this business makes
it clear to me that he is a total tyro.

[And folks, don't think for one second
that an experienced marketer can't tell
in one minute or less if you know what
you're talking about or not!]

The good news is that LG will not find the
start-up capital he needs unless he hooks
up with a Nigerian direct-mail scamster
and steals it from some rich old lady
in Pittsburgh.

The bad news is that LG may continue to believe the
foolish mantra his guru has been chanting and
continue to follow his passion...

Instead of learning something about
business before he jumps into it.

Getting into a MARKETING business
without knowing anything
about marketing?

LG and others like him would be well advised to hold
their passions in check until they've asked all the
right questions and thoroughly researched their market.

If there are other people out there making
good money doing more or less what you want
to do (but your idea is better),
by all means, go out and try it.

But if no one is doing it - and people you
trust give you that distant stare when you
tell them about it -

Be smart and put your energies into a business
that has been proven to make money.
